What would you like to be? Who would you like to be? It is so important for all of us to find out what God created us to be and who He wants us to be. There are some things that we need to understand about PEOPLE and about ourselves.
Knowing what people need and want is the KEY to understanding people. If you can understand people you will also understand better how to INFLUENCE them.
1. EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE SOMEBODY: There isn’t a person in the world who doesn’t have a desire to be somebody or to be significance in some way. Little kids on a school basketball team want to be recognized when they make a basket or get a rebound. We all want to be noticed.
2. NOBODY CARES HOW MUCH YOU KNOW UNTIL THEY KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CARE: This is a fact of life. People are tired to being hoodwinked and lied to about whatever is going on by someone who only cares about making the next buck.. Do you really care about people or just your own bottom line?
3. EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY: Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as self-made men and women. They all needed other people to help them get where they are . Someone helped them to make the choices in their life that pushed them to go forward. We all need help to make it in this life. I need this help and so do you. ITS CALLED TEAMWORK.
4. WE ALL CAN BE SOMEBODY WHEN WE HAVE SOMEBODY WHO BELIEVES IN US: Who did you have in your corner who believed in you? Who do you believe in right now that needs someone to believe in them? We have more influence in people’s lives than we realize. You can truly make a difference in people’s lives if we will take the time to UNDERSTAND THEM AND THEIR WANTS AND NEEDS.
5. ANYONE WHO HELPS ANOTHER INFLUENCES A LOT OF BODIES: When you help ONE PERSON you are really impacting a lot of other people at the same time. It even impacts you when you influence another life.
SO WE NEED TO CHOOSE TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS.
Today, I want to give you FOUR myths about LEADERSHIP that people tend to believe:
1. If I am not on TOP, I can’t LEAD. It is important to understand that LEADERSHIP is not POSITION, it is INFLUENCE.
2. When I get to the TOP, then I will learn to LEAD. You will be tomorrow what you are preparing for today.
3. If I were on TOP of the company, then everyone would follow me. If people don’t or won’t follow you now, they won’t follow you then either.
4. When I get to the TOP, I will be able to do ANYTHING. The truth is the higher you go in LEADERSHIP the less options you have.
It is so important to understand that LEADERSHIP IS INFLUENCE not POSITION. You can lead from anywhere in the organization, TOP OR BOTTOM.

Influence will never last if a person does not have INTEGRITY with the people he is trying to influence. Integrity is not just something you do, it is and has to be who you are. INTEGRITY has to be a major part of who you are as well as what you do.
In the first stage of INFLUENCE, “modeling” it will not take long for the people who begin to follow you, to realize if you have INTEGRITY OR NOT. It will become apparent in the decisions and judgments you make every day in your work, as well as in your family and free time.
INTEGRITY goes with you everywhere you go and everything you do. If you are not a person of INTEGRITY, make it a life PRINCIPLE TO BECOME a person of INTEGRITY. Without it you can never have followers that will follow you for long.
Modeling is the first step in having influence with people. People are influenced more by what they see than what you say or tell them. If they see it modeled in your life they will be more likely to follow you. When you first meet people, you have no influence on them at all unless there is someone you they know and trust introduces you to them; you will be more likely to have at least some influence with them. They will then assume that you are credible until they get to know you.
You can be a model to the masses, but to go to the higher levels of influence, you’ll have to work with individuals.
The second level is MOTIVATING. If you really want to have influence and make an impact in people’s lives, you must do it up close. PERSONAL AND INDIVIDUALS. You become a MOTIVATIONAL influencer when you encourage people and communicate with them on an emotional level, this does 2 things:
1. It creates a bridge between you and them.
2. It builds up their confidence and sense of self-worth. It helps people feel good about themselves and even feel good about you the INFLUENCER.
BUILD YOUR LIFE AROUND MODELING AND MOTIVATING OTHER PEOPLE AND YOU WILL GAIN INFLUENCE IN YOUR LIFE.
Influence is a curious thing. Even though we have an impact with nearly everyone around us, our influence is not the same with everyone. If you want to see this principle in action, try ordering your neighbor’s dog around. It doesn’t work. Our influence is only built with those we have relationship with. We must build the relationship first then we can have influence with them. Just as there are different stages of influence there are different stages of RELATIONSHIPS with people. Not all relationship are the same. Some people you just connect with and others you don’t seem to have as much in common. However relationships can be built, it just may take a little more time and effort on your part.
Influence doesn’t come instantaneously, instead it grows by stages. It grows in four stages:1. MODELING 2. MOTIVATION 3. MENTORSHIP 4. MULTIPLYING
As you go and grow through these stages your influence with other people with grow and develop.

Influence doesn’t come to us instantaneously; it grows by stages. Everyone has influence of some kind, the mom, the school teacher, the business owner, the worker at the plant. All of them have influence with someone and over someone. The question is not do I have influence, the question is WHAT KIND OF INFLUENCE DO I HAVE? Influence with people can be either GOOD OR BAD. The drug gangs on the streets of every major city has influence over young kids they are trying to get into their gangs. The problem is, it’s the wrong kind of influence. It is not leading young people the way they should be going. A mother has influence over her children, what is she teaching them? RIGHT OR WRONG?
People who really want to make a difference in people’s lives will have an influence in people’s lives that is positive that will lead them where they really want to go and NEED TO GO. I want to influence people in a direction that will help them go in the right direction. That is not always easy, but it is the best way.
Influence starts small and it grows in stages. Where ever you are right now, make up your mind that you are going forward with a positive attitude and with stages of influence that will make this a better world to live in.
John D. Rockefeller said, “Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people.” In true life situations there are not many people who will pay the price to really become a GOOD LEADER. There are a lot of people who want to rise to the top and have the position and be the leader, but experience has taught me that only a few will really apply themselves and even begin to reach their potential.
A lot of people want good things to happen in their life. Many people are looking for a better life with more money and more influence, but once again I have learned that most people want things to happen in their life, but only a small number of people can actually MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. The man or woman who can actually MAKE THINGS HAPPEN can usually write their own ticket. Every employer, every business owner is looking for a man or woman who really can make something HAPPEN. They are far and few between. Here’s the point, most people can make it happen, but also true most people won’t pay the price to cause it to happen. There is a price to pay for LEADERSHIP SUCCESS. Are you willing to pay the price? Take inventory of your life. How is what you are doing working for you?
The true measure of Leadership is influence, nothing more nothing less.
Law of E.F. Hutton says, “When the real leader speaks, people listen.” Whenever you can increase your influence you will increase your LEADERSHIP.
“There have been meetings of only a moment, which have left impressions for life, for eternity. No one can understand that mysterious thing we call influence, yet, everyone of us continually exerts influence, either to heal, to bless, to leave marks of beauty; or to wound, to hurt, to poison, to stain other lives.” J.R. Miller
The goal of LEADERSHIP TRAINING is to help people understand influence and to help you increase your influence with others. Influence is what makes a difference in your world. When you influence people for the better you make them better and you become better in the process.
Three questions to ask yourself every day:1. WHO do I influence? 2. HOW do I incluence others? 3. HOW MANY do I Influence every day.
Ask yourself these 3 questions and then go out every day and INFLUENCE OTHER PEOPLE IN A GREAT WAY. You will see a difference!
Leadership is based on the “LAW OF INFLUENCE.” In fact LEADERSHIP is nothing more and nothing less than INFLUENCE. Many people think that leadership is having a “Position” or a “Title” or maybe “Money and Power.” These things are not LEADERSHIP. You can have all those things and still not be a LEADER. The person with INFLUENCE is the real LEADER.
There are three questions that all followers will ask of a LEADER:
1. Do you care for me?
2. Can you help me?
3. Can I TRUST YOU?
A real leader will be asked these three questions and until he can answer them he does not qualify to be the LEADER. A leader must care for others at least as much as he cares for himself. That takes a very big person indeed. Next, do you have the knowledge and the know how to help other people with their struggle in life? Can you really help them have a better life? And last, can you be trusted, with integrity, character and a good testimony from those around you? THIS IS WHAT A LEADER IS ALL ABOUT.
Many people think that leadership is a position they get or arrive at in life. They think this makes them a leader. Leadership is not a position, it cannot be given to a person by gift or hire. Harold S. Geneen says, “Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions.” Many times people work at a job, maybe in a church or a corporation or some other employment; they say, ” One day I will work my way up to supervisor or manager and then I will be a leader.
Why not start out the job being a leader, not by getting a position but by having influence with the people that you work with around you. Leadership is not a position but it is having influence with people. You see at any level in an organization you can start out with influence. It’s the way you act, the way you work, the way you handle yourself. You influence people by having the best attitude, by having a spirit of working together with others. You have all heard the saying that a dad says to his son when he goes out to play. “Son play well with the other kids.” Leadership is being on the TEAM AND BEING THE BEST TEAM MEMBER in the group.
You can do this, but it does take a concerted effort and you must do it intentional. It begins with having the best ATTITUDE and the having the best ACTION to go along with the ATTITUDE. If you have the attitude to be a great leader, you can do this and show a great attitude. BE YOUR BEST!!
